Why red fades first
Red pigment does not anchor in the hair as firmly as brown or black pigment, so it rinses out a little with every wash. Heat, sun, chlorine and harsh shampoos speed that up. The good news is that small habits make a big difference.
Eight habits that keep red vibrant
- Wait a couple of days before the first wash after coloring.
- Wash less often, and use dry shampoo at the roots in between.
- Use a sulfate free shampoo; sulfates strip color faster.
- Rinse with cool water, which helps the cuticle stay closed.
- Use a heat protectant and lower the temperature on hot tools.
- Wear a hat or use a UV protecting product in strong sun.
- Wet your hair with clean water before swimming in chlorine.
- Book a glaze between color appointments to restore tone and shine.
